Malware knocks out U.S. Marshals Service Computers

•May 22, 2009 • Comments Off

Network World – Malware Wednesday crippled Windows-based computer systems at the U.S. Marshals Service, which hunts federal fugitives and operates the country’s witness protection program, knocking the agency’s network offline.

The agency’s press office confirmed it was having network problems and that its e-mail system was down Thursday morning, but it was unclear if the outage extended across the entire network.

Per government regulations agencies are required to report security incidents to the US-Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT). A call to CERT was not returned by press time.

It was not clear if the malware was the cause of the network outage or if the agency took down systems to stem the spread of what was believed to be the Neeris worm, which saw a new version appear last month that copies Conficker’s evil ways. The agency was running desktop malware software, but it had not been updated for more than three years — even though the agency had paid for upgrades to newer versions that protect against Neeris. In addition, Microsoft has issued two patches, one in 2006 and one in October, to close holes in its software exploited by Neeris.

The agency’s Web site was up and running Thursday morning, but a receptionist in the press office said "the agency’s whole e-mail system is down, and the agency is unable to receive e-mail."

Later, another press office staffer confirmed that there were network problems.

Members of the agency’s IT staff were communicating with vendors via Gmail accounts as they attempted to work through the issue.

The U.S. Marshals Service, a division of the Department of Justice, is the oldest federal law enforcement agency and has served the country since 1789.

There was no word if the problems had spread to the Department of Justice (DOJ) or to other agencies under the DOJ.

The U.S. Marshals Service has approximately 4,901 employees, which includes 94 U.S. marshals and 3,324 deputy U.S. marshals and criminal investigators. The agency’s fiscal 2008 budget was $864 million.

There were reports that the agency was hit with the Neeris worm, which infects desktops and can enable a remote user to execute malicious commands on the affected system.

Neeris and its variants are capable of propagating using multiple avenues including network shares and removable drives, via software vulnerabilities in servers to propagate across networks, and via Microsoft’s instant messaging clients.Trend Micro lists the risk rating for Neeris as "Low" but the damage potential as "High."

Michael Sweeny, global public relations director for Trend Micro, said the U.S. Marshals Service had contacted his company last night for help with its network issues.

He did not detail what those problems were and said he had not heard anything about Neeris being the culprit.

Pirated Windows 7 software part of criminal botnet

•May 13, 2009 • Comments Off

Windows 7 pirated versions have been found with hard-to-detect trojans intended for cybercrime purposes, according to a security firm.

Microsoft Windows 7 release candidate, made available to developers last week, almost immediately was pirated through various channels, including Torrents and news groups, according to security company Damballa. A pirated version Damballa has seen had a malware Trojan packed into it that would give an attacker the ability to take control of a computer and download whatever additional malware they wanted.

Tripp Cox, vice president of engineering at Damballa, says the pirated version basically becomes part of a criminal botnet.
The Trojan in this pirated version of Microsoft Windows 7 recently made use of the domain name "codecs.sytes.net" for its command-and-control, but Damballa worked with industry partners it declined to name to nullify its effective use.

Damballa then was able to observe the rate of piracy for the Windows 7 release and noted that cybercrime organizations appear to be ready to exploit it. Cox says Damballa has witnessed a few thousand downloads of the pirated version of Windows 7.

Microsoft plans 10 fake ‘updates’ for Windows 7

•May 10, 2009 • Comments Off

May 9, 2009 (Computerworld) Microsoft plans to test Windows 7′s update mechanism by feeding users of the just-issued Release Candidate as many as 10 fake updates in the coming week, the company said Friday.

It will be the second time that Microsoft has released phony updates for Windows 7; in February, it tested the beta by delivering five bogus patches.

People running Windows 7 RC, which publicly debuted late on May 4, will be offered the mock updates beginning on Tuesday, May 12, said Brandon LeBlanc, a Microsoft spokesman. Microsoft wants to "verify our ability to deliver and manage updating of Windows 7 in certain real-life scenarios," LeBlanc explained in a blog post Friday evening.

As before, the updates do not actually deliver any new features or fixes, but replace existing system files with exact duplicates.

Internet pirates buy 10 times more music than others

Piracy may be the bane of the music industry but according to a new study, it may also be its engine. A report from the BI Norwegian School of Management has found that those who download music illegally are also 10 times more likely to pay for songs than those who don’t.

Everybody knows that music sales have continued to fall in recent years, and that filesharing is usually blamed. We are made to imagine legions of internet criminals, their fingers on track-pads, downloading songs via BitTorrent and never paying for anything. One of the only bits of good news amid this doom and gloom is the steady rise in digital music sales. Millions of internet do-gooders, their fingers on track-pads, who pay for songs they like – purchasing them from Amazon or iTunes Music Store. And yet according to Professor Anne-Britt Gran’s new research, these two groups may be the same.

Boost Mobile Helps Sprint, But At a Price

•May 5, 2009 • Comments Off

Boost Mobile Service Problems Due to Surprising Growth – Verizon can talk about the strength of its network, and AT&T can peddle its rollover minutes, but in the end, customers are looking for a bargain. That’s why Boost, the prepaid service that’s part of Sprint, is growing on the might of its $50 unlimited phone, text and data plan, even as Sprint itself sheds subscribers.

The average estimate from seven analysts, according to Reuters, puts 180,000 more subscribers over to Boost in the first quarter. Meanwhile, Sprint is expected to lose 1.1 million postpaid subscribers. Overall, Boost is giving hope to the company, with Sprint shares doubling in the first quarter. Boost may not be enough to save the ailing Sprint, but one analyst said it’s at least doing well enough to sell out phones in some areas.

Still, with growth comes the stress of a larger subscriber base, and Boost is feeling it. Users are reporting delays in the delivery of text messages, which can arrive hours late. In denying that the problems point to an underlying issue with the network, a spokesman told the Associated Press that this is, in fact, a matter of growing pains.

“The popularity of Boost Mobile caught us off guard. It overwhelmed our system,” John Votava said, adding that the problems would likely be “much improved” by next week. Hopefully your friends won’t have any troubling finding out Where You At by then. [via AP and Reuters]

Leaked Windows 7 Release Candidate hits the Web

•April 26, 2009 • Comments Off

Pirated copies of the Windows 7 Release Candidate have leaked to file-sharing sites, according to several reports on the Internet and searches of BitTorrent trackers.

A search on the Mininova.org BitTorrent tracking site early Friday found six Windows 7 Build 7100 listings, available in both 32- and 64-bit versions, that commenters identified as the Release Candidate (RC) Microsoft Corp. will deliver early next month.

As of 11 a.m. ET, the six torrents on Mininova showed more than 1,400 total "seeders" — the term for a computer that has a complete copy of the torrent file — and about 14,000 "leechers," or computers that have downloaded only part of the complete torrent. Approximately 20,000 copies of the files have been downloaded since the leaked Windows 7 RC hit file-sharing sites earlier today.
